Engagement shapes
Fractional capacity for organisations that need architectural judgment more often than they need headcount.
1.0What an engagement looks like
- Fractional architect. Ongoing part-time ownership of cloud and AI architecture and technical direction.
- Architecture and AI-readiness reviews. Bounded engagements, delivered the way the case studies on this site are written: the decision, the alternatives, and what each buys you.
- MarTech and customer-data work. Twenty years of it, from ExactTarget to Salesforce Marketing Cloud to AWS engagement services, now with LLMs in the loop.
- Interim technical leadership. Cover for the gap while you hire, without the pressure to make the hire badly.
2.0The two questions worth answering up front
Anyone weighing a fractional engagement has two quiet questions. They deserve direct answers.
Capacity. Roughly 20 hours a week, fractional or contract, stated plainly so the commitment is checkable. I also run SplitKit, the production platform these case studies draw from. It is engineered to cost and demand near-nothing when no event is running; it is what keeps the judgment you’re hiring current, not a second job competing for your hours.
Duration. SplitKit is a build I operate, not a role I’m auditioning to leave for. It is deliberately sized to stay a one-person system. Engagements get committed hours and committed terms up front, so the calendar protects you rather than good intentions. And I’m open to the right permanent role.
3.0Logistics
Remote-first from Rotorua, New Zealand, with full NZ work rights. Native overlap with Australian and New Zealand working hours, and my mornings land in the US afternoon, so same-day collaboration with American teams is routine. Comfortable trans-Tasman, and no stranger to distributed teams: I’ve led one from the other side of the world for the past year.
